Castle Leod

15th Century family home of the Chief of clan Mackenzie, The Earl of Cromartie, surrounded by award winning trees set in magnificent parkland.
Castle Leod has been lived in by the same family of Mackenzies for over 500 years and encapsulates a Highland castle set amidst superb grounds. The castle is a home and not a museum where members of the family and The Earl of Cromartie will greet you. The castle offers real Highland history, the family having had close connections with the Stuart dynasty, the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and involved with many local and national events over the centuries. The castle is one of the very few that have not been altered since 1600, thus retaining an unrivalled quality and ageless charm.
The parkland surrounding the castle has some of the finest trees in the British Isles with award winning specimens, including the biggest tree in Britain and the oldest recorded planting of a hardwood in the UK. The woodland walk includes the oldest tree, a Spanish Chestnut planted in 1550 for Mary of Guise, Mary Queen of Scots mother as well as many other unusual trees. In Spring and early Summer daffodils and bluebells surround the castle, creating a superb spectacle that sets off the warm pink sandstone castle to perfection.
