Binny Plants
Located on the tail of Binny Craig, Binny Plants has a rural setting in the old kitchen and walled gardens of Binny House and Estate which is now a private hospital. The gardens and nursery are on a south facing slope with a mixture of various planted areas and sales and growing areas. Binny is not a garden centre but a specialist nursery with over 2500 species and cultivars which are grown here in the nursery making them well adapted to the local climate.
The range of plants at Binny is a good cross selection Trees, Shrubs, Ferns and Grasses. The main emphasis is on Herbaceous plants with an expanding pending National Collection of Peonies which is probably the largest in the UK. The Peonies are planted in various parts of the nursery grounds and are sight to behold in late May and June along with the plantings of Siberian Irises. The entrance driveway is where the woodland garden in located. This area has a large collection of ferns, Meconopsis, Hellebores, Rodgersias, Ligularias (including the original plant of Ligularia Britt-Marie Crawford. There are flowers in bloom for most of the year in the woodland garden culminating in the late summer show of Astilbes, Actaea and other stately perennials. The atmosphere is relaxed with only the sound of the birds and an occasional plane. There are seating areas and a minimal amount of signs and fancy picture labels on plants. Most visitors are welcomed by our friendly dogs who laze around most of the time.
We are a plant nursery and do not sell gifts or food. Our staff are knowledgeable and happy to give advice on plants and planting.
Visiting Binny is a unique experience and well worth the effort. We are only three quarters of an hour from the centre of Edinburgh or Glasgow and close to Scotlands major motorways. Our website and extensive and easy to use. It will give you a good idea of what to expect.
