There's nothing quite like the Shetland Recreational Trust anywhere else. Since 1985 the trust has built up an impressive network of 8 leisure facilities within easy reach of the vast majority of Shetland's 22,000 population - and the thousands of visitors who are astonished at the quality and quantity of recreation facilities at the northern tip of Britain.
The idea behind the Shetland Recreational Trust was to use some of Shetland's oil revenue to provide 'facilities for whole communities to meet, socialise and play. They will be a major attraction for local residents and will be important facilities in the attraction of tourists'.
Shetlanders and visitors alike have responded by flocking to the facilities. Usage levels are much higher than anyone expected - almost 750,000 visits were recorded for the period 2004/2005 - proving just how exceptional our facilities are.
