Lochcarron Shinty Club

Lochcarron Shinty Club

Shinty is Scotland's oldest team sport with origins in the mists of the early Celtic heroic era. The game, in its modern form, is played throughout the Highlands and beyond. Together with its Irish cousin hurling, shinty has a passing resemblance to hockey though the rules are very different. A shinty team is composed of twelve players, each closely marked by his opponent. The pitch is 170 yards long with 12-foot wide goals. The stick or caman has two sloped faces enabling players to hit the ball on both sides as in ice hockey. The caman can be swung above the head and the ball stopped with the feet, but only the keeper may use his hands. The game demands great stamina, considerable skill and fast reaction, particularly when played at speed.

The club plays in the Premier League of shinty against the top teams from Scotland. The club holds the title of Marine Harvest Club of the Year 2002. We have five international players capped for Scotland and hold an Investors in People Award, the first entirely volunteer-based organisation in the Highlands to achieve this status.
