The Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games has over 100 years of history behind it and in this the year of Homecoming Scotland should be a priority for lovers of highland Games, History and the outdoors alike.
The Games in Helensburgh first took place at Larchfield Park (behind where this years Games will be held) in 1898, the Games continued until 1905 and didn’t take place again until 1924 again held at Larchfield with over 4,000 attending, the next Games were not held until 1949 this time at Camis Eskan Farm with 15,000 attending on the day, we are not sure if Games were held in 1950 or 1951, the 1952 Games at Camis Eskan attracted 14,000, this was the last real Highland Games to be held in Helensburgh until 2008, when the present Games committee brought the Games back to the town for the first time in 56 years with over 3,500 attending on the day, in 2009 over 5,000 attended.
The aim of our Games Committee is to provide a Highland Games worthy of attracting crowds as big as they were at the 1949 and 1952 Games, with the help of visitors from home and abroad this can and will be achieved.
Our Chieftain is Diarmid Iain MacAulay, Chief of Clan MacAulay, who owned the land (Ardencaple) in ancient times where the Games are now held, including the once magnificent Ardencaple Castle (see our website for further historical information). The Clan Colquhoun bought the land in later times, and (their Clan Chief, Sir Malcolm Colquhoun is the Patron of the Games), eventually building the town named after the his wife, Helensburgh.
The 2010 are bigger again than 2009, with two championships having been awarded to the Games, the British 90m and the Scottish Shot Putt, the 2009 Games had more athletic events than in 2008, with the 200m, 800m and 1,600m having been added to the 90m, Hill Run, Primary school relays and Inter-club relays. The Hill Run is a 7.7km run rising 354 metres to the top of Tom na h-Airidh which can be seen from the Games arena.
Our Heavy Events will be even bigger with 15 giants taking to the arena to do battle for the overall championship, the highlight of the 2008 Heavy Events was our own Neil Elliott lifting the 100kg Maglashon stone from floor to chest 7 times in the given 75 seconds, Neil will be trying to better his 2nd overall placing from 2008 at this years Games.
With over 40 stalls, there is surely something for everyone to eat, drink and buy, Helensburgh Rugby Club are running the beer tent and BBQ, there will be a kick the bucket, pillow fight and beer keg carry to challenge the best.
