Walking Tours of Old Glasgow (La Nouvelle Alliance)

Walking Tours of Old Glasgow

Discover this most surprising of cities and experience the unique atmosphere, grandeur and particular charm of the "Dear green place". Walk in the footsteps of Glasgow's founder St Mungo and hear the stories and legends connected with this great Celtic saint. Trace the development of his small monastic settlement, aided by great Scottish Figures like King Malcolm Canmore and King David I. Hear about the establishment of Glasgow as an archdiocese under Archbishop Robert Blackadder, reflected in the majestic Gothic grandeur of the double choired Glasgow Cathedral and its stunning Blackadder Isle.

Discover post-Reformation Glasgow and see places like Provand's Lordship, haunted by members of the ill-fated House of Stewart including James IV and his glamorous granddaugher Mary Queen of Scots. Experience the ancient ceremonial route stretching from Castle Street down the High Street, stopping at the original site of Glasgow University. Prepare to be horrified as you hear about the grizzly anatomical experiments of Professor Jeffrey and the activities of the Ressurectionists. The Glasgow Enlightenment also happened here, featuring a pantheon of Glasgow worthies including Adam Smith and William Leachman. Stroll down Ingram Street and meet Glasgow's first millionaires John Cunninghame and John Glassford and see the work of Scotland's most famous architect Robert Adam.

Our grand finale will take you via the Trongate into the Saltmarket and Glasgow Green. Here you will discover the site of one of Glasgow's most recent restoration projects, the stunning and unforgettable Doulton Fountain.

Each tour begins at the Tourist Information Centre in George Square. There are two tours per day for which you can pre-book or just turn up; they run from Monday to Thursday and on Saturday each week.
