Built in1536 and set in 25 acres of mature gardens and woodlands this imposing Scottish Manor House offers traditional warmth and elegance, magnificent views and an air of mystery!
Barony Castle has one resident ghost, known simply as “Mary”, possibly Mary Maxwell; house keeper for Elizabeth (“Bare Betty”) Murray when the new façade was erected on the old castle. Numerous accounts of her visits are recorded, mainly on the 3RD floor, especially room 302 but also on the 2nd floor and spiral staircase (closed to the public). She appears to be interested in the doings of the modern house-keepers. She is also reported to sit or stand at the bottom of guests’ beds from time to time. It is also possible that “Mary” may be the “Agnes” referred to by Sir Walter Scott, although she would then predate the construction of the East Façade by about 70 years!
Ghostly footsteps are heard at various points around the grounds, most notably outside the “Buttery”, in the toilets behind reception and in the staff cottage.
“Auld Reekie” has been seen often since the 1920’s, in what is now the Tweeddale room. He appears as if sitting in a rocking chair staring at the fireplace (bricked up in 1986). Often accompanied by the smell of cigar smoke and a whiff of brandy. He is thought to be Alexander Fox Murray who lost both his sons in the Great War, before selling the Estate as a Hotel in 1927. The apparition seems totally unaware of the presence of onlookers and fades or disappears leaving only the smell of cigar smoke. Several witnesses report rapid temperature changes before or after his “visits”. A black shadow sometimes the shape of a dog has also been seen in this room.
