Hetland Garden Nursery

Hetland Garden Nursery

Hetland Garden Nursery is a family run business located off the A75 between Annan and Dumfries on the Solway Coast with the Cumbrian Fells in the distance. The nursery has developed since the 1960's from being a small holding, growing tomatoes, strawberries and salad crops. It then became a piggery followed by a building yard and finally in the 1980's the premises turned full circle back to being a small nursery and plant retail centre.

Under new ownership from 1995 it has progressed from three poly-tunnels to a 1200sq ft retail shop with car parking for over 200 cars. It also now has a tearoom which seats 84 people inside and 40 outside, plus an extensive plant area which is partly covered by a glass canopy which leads into the newly restored garden area.

The garden area has had extensive work and restoration carried out in 2005 and a 73ft wooden bridge now leads through to a secluded woodland garden area where our customers can meander through display gardens and walkways. You can also visit Toms Old Bothy and see Henrietta the hippo standing in the stream. As this project is ongoing some planting may still be taking place but this will not disturb the tranquility and peacefulness of this outdoor haven.

The nursery which has now developed into a large garden centre specializes in hardy plants and prides itself on being a true plant centre. Plants are sourced from all over the UK and are also hand picked from nurseries in Tuscany. These plants are also hardy to our climate but Tuscany has the advantage of a longer growing season which means that specimen plants are more affordable. This has the benefit of adding extra interest and character to the plant area. A lot of annual bedding plants are sourced locally in Scotland and Cumbria and are delivered to us each week. We also have many containers which are planted to give instant colour to the patio area.

Hetland Nursery offers a huge range of terracotta, zinc, concrete and resin containers which look like stone but are light in weight. Garden furniture is displayed in the refurbished showroom which features resin, aluminium, teak and other hardwoods which are F.S.C. forested. We pride ourselves not only on the quality of the stock we carry but also on the affordability of it.

In the main shop all gardening products that you would expect to find are sold including chemicals, fertilizer, hand tools, pond equipment, pond liners etc. A new gift area has just opened adjacent to the Oak Tree tearoom and has a wide range of books, cards, candles, silk flowers, jams, shortbread, house-ware etc.

The Oak Tree Tearoom, which is situated within the garden centre, offers warm and enjoyable surroundings to relax in. Our home cooking and baking is very popular and a wide selection of beverages are also available.

For those with walking disabilities, we offer free use of our wheelchairs and all areas are easily accessible, including our Oak Tree Tearoom.

Hetland Nursery is open 7 days a week, all year round and between the 1st of April until the end of June is open on some evenings until 8pm.

In the Winter months leading up to Xmas the garden centre is transformed into a Winter Wonderland. The Christmas shop is brimming over with wonderful colours and decorations of all kinds including artificial trees and real trees. Santa's Grotto comes alive with animated snowmen and cuddly animals set in a variety of winter scenes. At any time of year, Hetland is well worth a visit, always having an interesting range of products and offering a shoopping experience with a difference.
