St Mary's Cathedral

St Mary's Cathedral

Roman Catholic

St Marys Cathedral occupies the site of the much smaller chapel of St Marys, 1814. The church was created a pro-Cathedral on the restoration of the Scottish Hierarchy in 1878 and when Edinburgh was added to the ancient title of the see of St Andrews, that had been vacant for 307 years. In 1886, at the request of Bishop Smith, the church was raised in status to that of Metropolitan Cathedral of the new Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh, with all the rights and privileges thereof. On the Gothic central section, at the front of St Marys, are remains of the 1814 chapel. Organ by Ernest Lawton, 1932. Other areas have been subject to ongoing lateral enlargement and vertical modifications.
