What to see and do

Edinburgh - Other Districts

Leith Waterfront, the cosmopolitan heart of the old port

Information enquiry

There's a great deal to be discovered by exploring beyond the compact centre of Edinburgh, in particular along the Firth of Forth coastline to the north and the rise of the Pentland Hills to the south.

Just over a mile northeast of the city centre is Leith, the historic port of Edinburgh. Once a decaying dockland on the capital's doorstep, Leith has been transformed to become one of the city's most exciting and vibrant districts.. Nearby you can find a flavour of the city's maritime and fishing heritage at the atmospheric harbour of Newhaven, while the long beach at Portobello is still a popular spot on a sunny day. To the northwest of the city are the more placid charms of the old Roman village of Cramond.
