Golf and gannets: the Bass Rock, North Berwick

Information enquiry

North Berwick is a very pleasant seaside town in East Lothian, boasting great beaches and coastal scenery, and the Scottish Seabird Centre.

North Berwick is under an hour east of Edinburgh. It is a particularly pleasant old-fashioned seaside town on the shores of the Firth of Forth as it opens up and heads out into the North Sea.

Big Victorian villas line the front, which stretches along a small harbour filled with fishing boats and a long sandy beach that is very popular with day-trippers. The town has all the amenities you might need, including classic fish n' chip shops and ice cream parlours. The pretty town park has crazy golf and a playground, while there is a putting green on the front. There are several courses in the area for the serious golfer; North Berwick's ranking among the best in the world.

The coastal scenery is stunning in both directions, such as Yellowcraigs beach and Fidra Island to the west, and the amazing volcanic island of Bass Rock offshore, home to 100,000 gannets which come to breed each year. You can watch the birds, including puffins, on cameras at the Scottish Seabird Centre, or get closer to them by taking a boat trip around the Rock.
